Renovating your home can be so much fun, but it can also be stressful.
From my experience there are three things that are an absolute must:
- your vision
- your budget
- your team
You have to know where you want to end up – the look and feel you’re going for, the features you love, and the things you want to steer clear of. Be really clear on your vision. Write it down. Make a vision board. Do whatever you need to do to clearly see each and every part of your plan. Remember also that a good plan also has a timeline.
Be really clear on your budget. Make sure you have a little bit of money tucked aside for contingency but also make sure you have quotes submitted on a very clear scope of works. If there are exclusions in the quotes, ask about them. You don’t want to be hit with a massive invoice for variations at the end!
You must have a team of tradies that you trust and preferably a foreman or builder who can also see your vision. They need to be skilled at their craft and able to follow the plan. It can also be handy if they can make suggestions to improve the end result whilst still keeping the vision in mind.
Renovating is just like so many other things in life – particularly running a business, buying a house, planning a holiday (wouldn’t that be nice right now!) or creating a life that you love.
Remember, planning is what helps you get to where you want to be. Don’t leave things to chance.
What would you add to my list?
