These days tiny houses are all the rage. But whether you’re living in a tiny (or small) house by choice or necessity, the last thing you want to feel is cramped.
So how do you maximise a small space or make a small space seem larger?
Firstly, storage is your friend. Find ways to create storage spaces and get organised. Having “stuff” – whether it is beautiful things that you love, or items that are needed and just don’t have a home, can make you feel overwhelmed and make spaces feel smaller.
Whether you can utilise under lounges and beds for storage or you get hyper organised in every cupboard and drawer in the house, do it. Put things away and keep it neat.
Secondly, or maybe you should have started here – get rid of what you don’t need. If it doesn’t fit, donate it. If it hasn’t been used in a year, donate it. If it’s past it’s use by date, chuck it. If you don’t love it or it doesn’t bring you joy, re-gift, recycle, remove.
Get rid of excess!
Finally, make good decisions when purchasing furniture and decorator items:
- Choose low profile furniture with sleek, modern lines
- Strategically place furniture so walkways aren’t blocked and there is an easy flow from room to room
- Use mirrors to reflect space and light
- Decorate with light colours to keep it airy
- Keep things consisent from one room to another – like flooring and colour palettes
- Maximise vertical space – with tall narrow bookshelves or floating shelves and bedside tables.
Embrace the small and make it work for you.
